Understanding the Biological Basis of Personality: A Deeper Insight
How might understanding the biological basis of personality help us better understand ourselves and others?
Studies on the biological aspects of personality provide a useful clue as to why people are as they are. Personality is a multifactorial trait that depends on gene-environment interactions and neural substrates. By analyzing genetics, brain structure, pathology, and neurotransmitters, we can understand where our unique features, behavior, and predispositions come from.
For example, studies on the roles of phenotypes such as serotonin and dopamine reveal how they impact mood and conduct. It has been suggested that people with less serotonin could be more susceptible to anxiety or depression. In contrast, people with more dopamine could be more in search of exciting experiences, contributing to the variability of features such as extraversion or neuroticism. It will give one the understanding that some behaviors or characteristics exhibited are not a result of the person’s decision but are biologically determined, making society more receptive and forgiving.
