Epistemology and Models
Epistemology is the field of psychology that deals with nature, knowledge generation and justification, and the belief's rationality; addressing belief justification, what it implies to state that an individual knows something, and the processes related to the acquisition of specific knowledge. The discipline is characterized by various discourses, including those between empiricism and rationalism or the interaction between relativism and absolute truth (Tavernaro-Haidarian, 2018). Epistemology is tailored to establish whether an individual's claims can withstand critical appraisal to ensure individuals differentiate between factual knowledge and simple ideas. For example, to understand God's nature, people need to leverage techniques other than empirical ones. Based on the arguments above, it can be derived that the three models that establish the certainty of the degree to which an individual's perception reflects reality include belief, truth, and justification. In this vein, justification and truth are independent variables influencing beliefs (Entwistle, 2015). This implies that the justification of a belief does not authenticate its truth because that depends on how the individual derived the belief.
Personal Position and Rationale
Accordingly, I hold the position that a belief is correct or, instead, the coherence model. According to the coherence theory, an individual tells the truth when their statement can withstand congruence with the larger systems of other related truth-bearers (Raatikainen, 2021). Beliefs are true when congruent to specific privileged belief systems, such as beliefs related to sensory experiences. For example, it is fallacious to discredit one's experiences regarding the nature of God as incorrect, thus reiterating the need to embrace belief systems that coincide with more prominent established truth bearers. In this respect, coherence is more than mere logical consistency. Instead, coherence comprises specific beliefs encompassed within other belief systems (Raatikainen, 2021).
