Carl Jung was one of the most influential theorists from the psychoanalytic school of thought, whose ideas continue to influence modern psychology. Although he was a protégé of Sigmund Freud, he later split off to develop his own theory, analytical psychology (Spielman et al., 2020). Jung split off from Freud because he did not agree with his idea that sexual drive primarily motivated a person’s mental life. While Jung agreed with the Freudian concept of the personal unconscious, he believed it was not complete (Spielman et al., 2020). Therefore, Jung focused his attention on the concept of collective unconscious in addition to the personal unconscious by Freud. In essence, as Spielman et al. (2020) informed, the main concepts from Jung’s theory include the collective unconscious, archetypes, persona, and extroversion and introversion.
The collective unconscious refers to memory traces or mental patterns
