In the past, women were discouraged from using their minds in science and technology. Parents did not care much about sending their girls to schools and colleges; still, a couple of females not only received the higher education, but also contributed to different fields like biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, geography, and others. You may not have heard about the female mathematicians; that’s only because they used to be pushed behind the competition by the male mathematicians. Despite this, the following females made remarkable discoveries, invented different mathematical formulas and equations, and are still admired by the world.
NUMBER THEORY
1. Biographical description: Who, when, where, etc.
Born in May 1923, Cathleen Synge was a famous Canadian physicist and mathematician who spent several years in the United States due to her studies and research projects. She developed different probability and number of theories and came up with the partial differential equation governing fluid flow (Morawetz, 2004).
2. Why is this mathematician notable?
Her dad, John Lighton Synge, gained fame as an Irish mathematician and specialized in geometry, and her mom had also studied mathematics in high school. Both of them became the inspiration for Morawetz. Cecilia Krieger, one of Cathleen Synge’s aunts, encouraged her to pursue a degree in mathematics.
3. What events or challenges led to the mathematical importance of this person? What relevant history preceded their importance?
Her works on compressible fluids, transonic flows, viscosity, and number theory have been published in international journals. She also wrote papers on Tricomi equations (Morawetz, 2004).
4. What impact did this person have on the associated branch of mathematics (and if appropriate, other disciplines)?
For several years, she worked as a professor at the New York University, where she received the National Medal of Science in 1997. She impacted the field of mathematics by introducing new formulas and contributed to number theory.

ALGEBRA

Algebra is the study of manipulating different mathematical symbols and includes everything from abstractions to solving the equations. Lynn Nelson and Alison Wylie published an article titled Introduction: Hypatia Special Issue on Feminist Science Studies in which they mention that unlike other female mathematicians who mainly focused on probability theory and other things, Hypatia came up with different mathematical symbols that became the foundation of algebra (Nelson & Wylie, 2004).
2. Why is this mathematician notable?
She emerged as a philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician, and was the first female whose life has been well recorded.
3. What events or challenges led to the mathematical importance of this person? What relevant history preceded their importance?
She co-wrote a commentary on Arithmetic and penned a story on Apollonius of Perga.
4. What impact did this person have on the associated branch of mathematics (and if appropriate, other disciplines)?
Before her death, Hypatia presented several mathematical formulas and equations and contributed to physics and chemistry too (Nelson & Wylie, 2004).

GEOMETRY

Sue Hays Whitesides is one of the best and most prominent Canadian mathematicians. She has been a successful computer scientist too, who taught computer science and mathematics at the University of Victoria (1998).
2. Why is this mathematician notable?
She is best known for her contributions to computational geometry.
3. What events or challenges led to the mathematical importance of this person? What relevant history preceded their importance?
As a part of her research projects, Sue Hays has developed great data structures and algorithms that we can use to solve different problems related to line segments, polyhedral, polygons, and other geometrical objects.
4. What impact did this person have on the associated branch of mathematics (and if appropriate, other disciplines)?
In 1975, Whitesides completed her Ph.D. in mathematics and later served at the University of Victoria, McGill University, and Dartmouth College. Besides this, she was the in-charge of the 2012 Symposium on Computational Geometry (1998). Throughout her studies, she was influenced by her professors and seniors to contribute to this branch of mathematics.
