What Staff Elements Are Responsible For Including Space In The Military Decision Making Process By: Frederick Evans Course: Advanced Leader CourseInstitution: GSPTC   Instructors: MSG Tello  SFC McCaskill  Due Date: 01NOV2024 Introduction Integrating space in military decision-making has become a critical success element in contemporary warfare. It is not a choice but a compulsion to include space as a strategic domain to influence all the vital military decisions, including military planning, execution, and success (Lieberman, 2020). I have witnessed space technology's overdependence in military operations, ranging from satellite communications to security or intelligence to signal interceptions. Space-based technology also makes a huge contribution to synchronizing battlefield coordination. Armed forces are considered to be participating in the three key domains, i.e., land, sea, and air. However, space is the most significant fourth dimension of military operations in modern warfare. The adoption of space in warfare is crucial for the progress and evolution of military organizations. The integration of space as a critical strategy in military decisions needs the support of multiple staff elements within the military for the execution of the policies. These staff elements combine to ensure smooth space operations in military operations. Their role is vital for national security and progress (Lieberman, 2020). The subsequent essay discusses some key staff elements responsible for including space in military decision-making. Strategic leadership is the first and foremost staff element responsible for integrating space into military planning. From my viewpoint, the military commanders and top leadership must ensure their contribution and involvement at every level of adoption and integration of space into military planning. They state the direction of the military operation and set targets to be achieved using space technology. They are responsible for identifying the significance of space assets and integration within military decisions (Amir & Rehman, 2024). It is their responsibility to assess the need for resources and staff elements for the successful execution of the strategy for space integration. Military leadership manages funds and equipment for the achievement of their space objectives. Strategic leadership establishes a vision and goal for military operations, but the operations staff is the one that brings the vision to life. They are one of the critical staff elements responsible for integrating space into military planning. They serve as the technical backbone responsible for achieving the established goals. Space operations staff are experts and specialists with technical knowledge and skills in space technology, including satellite communication, navigation, and GPS (Amir & Rehman, 2024). They help in the operation of equipment and the interpretation of data acquired from space technologies. For instance, the goal of the military is to improve surveillance, so the space operations staff will help by identifying the right surveillance satellite, programming the satellite to achieve the specific goal, providing real-time data, and interpreting the data obtained through advanced satellite systems to be used for strategic warfare decisions. Intelligence analysts are another significant staff element responsible for turning space data into actionable insights. They have technical knowledge of space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), which helps collect extensive data amounting to images, signals, and environmental data which can only be used after interpretation into intelligent information for military planning and decision-making. They obtain data from space-based systems, process and organize data by filtering unrelated information, and align the relevant data with targets established by military leadership. Data is further analyzed to identify the trends and patterns. Any anomaly or inconsistency is reported to the leadership by preparing reports or briefs to offer their interpretations of the data analyzed and make appropriate recommendations in alignment with the space technology (Al-Rodhan, 2012). For instance, identification of an increase in the aircraft of any rival nation might be interpreted as an impendin...
