Leader Ethics
The powers and authority bestowed upon leaders shoulder significant responsibility. This presupposition highlights that some of them are predisposed to misuse the authority available to them. Since they are capable of exhibiting both extremes, governance stakeholders have emphasized the role of ethics among organizational leaders. Ethical leaders inspire the collective including their subordinates to assuming actions and paths in sync with the greater good. In addition, ethical leaders gain massive respect, credibility, and reputation. Alternatively stated, actions guided by ethical principles result in positive collective and personal consequences. Ethics facilitates the articulation of principles and values the majority recognize as sound and more so in that they guarantee the greater good. Such principles and values include honesty, transparency, fairness, trust, respect, and integrity. Choosing global organizational leaders who have executed these principles through their social media would put Elon Musk in a positive light.
Elon Musk is the archetype representation of the Messiah, considering the leader’s following on Twitter. The archetypal presupposition relates to a person that would want to meet in their lifetime or else is one who is a source of inspiration. Musk’s followers are a testament to this position. Twitter and LinkedIn and more so the former might be the most referenced social media platforms in this report because they are the most popular social media platforms among top organization executives. The probable reasons these sites are preferred are that Twitter facilitates the expression of ideas in a concise and succinct approach, and LinkedIn’s specific design is for the business community (Curran et al., 2011; Edwards et al., 2015). Digressing to the most important issue, which is Musk’s ethical stances that make him top his peers.
The most straightforward basis upon which Musk gains the credit is premised upon the companies he runs and the information that he posts to the masses. Elon is the chief executive officer (CEO) of the popular automobile company, Tesla, and founder, chief engineer, and CEO at Space X, which is a space exploration company (Trujillo, 2017). Although many CEOs are afraid of using social media, Musk finds the experience quite exhilarating (McGregor, 2019). He uses the Twitter platform to update his followers on his companies’ progress and products to be launched. Tesla is primarily bent upon producing electric vehicles (EVs). Not long ago, many people were unconvinced whether electric vehicles would achieve any feasible market share until Musk entered the limelight. His induction into the sphere can be thought of as a blessing to humanity, considering that the human race was and is still grappling with climate change. His commitment towards manufacturing EVs is a major coup for the world, considering the widespread use of internal combustion engines (ICEs). This outcome underscores the greatest ethical practice, given that it is geared at protecting humanity from an existential threat.
Another impressive feat from Elon Musk is that he never shies from confrontations particularly those that have implications to the greater public. The Tesla chief has been engaged in several confrontations but has remained true to himself in eliciting his most honest opinion, at least momentarily. The most recent one is voicing his concerns over the energy usage of the present popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. In his assertion, the cryptocurrency was a major energy sucker, particularly in its mining process. Consequently, he declared that his company, Tesla, had suspended digital currency as a means of payment until those concerns were addressed (Clifford, 2021). The monumental tweet came amidst China’s ban on bitcoin mining, although such news was expected, considering the communism in the Far East nation. Musk’s position facilitated the progressive step whereby stakeholders proceeded to establish this hypothesis. Later clarifications showed that bitcoin consumes limited energy compared to the production of fiat currency. On the other hand, one could perceive this move from Musk as possible actions that an investor or speculator would take, instead of being the one spearheading the rise of crypto. Retrospectively, it would be catastrophic for him if the coin failed. However, he was transparent in his thoughts, allowing for Bitcoin’s organic growth through the market forces of supply and demand.
Elon’s calibrated ethical steps cannot be placed in a similar spectrum with the efforts of Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg has come under constant criticism for the use of his social media platform. Essentially, the problem is not with Mark’s Facebook account, but the entire owner, with whom he is the founder and the CEO. The fi...
