This memorandum aims to alert our leadership team to trends and issues of critical importance to human capital as it operates in the new world of work in the 21st century. The world is rapidly evolving, and best practices are changing how we recruit, retain, and get work out of talent. By naming three trends in HR right now, combining technology in HR, remote and flexible work, and data-driven HR analytics, and three challenges, privacy of employees, workforce well-being, and reskilling requirements, we can better prepare for effective human capital management. This update describes both opportunities and risks and provides evidence-based recommendations for action.
The first big trend is the increased use of new technologies in HR processes. Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and metaverse platforms are used for recruitment, onboarding, and training to improve efficiency and scalability (Armstrong & Mitchell, 2019). Second, remote and flexible work conditions have shifted from ad hoc measures to long-term expectations.
