Servant leadership first of all begins with one’s willingness to serve others (Greenleaf R. K., 2002). The feeling of serving others has to come naturally to the person before engaging in it. Most leaders are known for taking advantage of leadership positions to benefit themselves in one way or another. This should not be the case because leadership is not an opportunity but rather a huge responsibility. Robert. K. Greenleaf outlined the requirements that one has to have in order to be considered a servant leader (Greenleaf R. K., 2002). The main requirement is having a conscious choice which overpowers other greedy ambitions that come with the possession of power. One leader that follows such guidelines in Sir Richard Branson. This paper sets out to illustrate the servant leadership contributions that he has employed in leading the staff in his company.
About Richard Branson
Being the founder of the Virgin group which manages over 400 companies globally, he is a man who has a lot of responsibilities and requires a lot of help in managing them. Despite this fact, he is always in tune to make the world a better place by changing it the way he can. He does this by being a servant to his staff and leading by example. Those who work with him, therefore, follow his example through his methods of serving them (Branson, 2014).
