Brent Staples describes how his youthful years were different from the modern times because of the cyberspace. He starts by narrating how he approached the girl of a steelworker and how the events of the era were instrumental in developing real strong social bonds. He compares that experience with the interactions on the cyberspace and how they have a negative impact on the psychosocial development of the teenagers. He argues that cyberspace lacks some of the necessary elements of preparing adolescents for adulthood and offers few reasons for his assertions which are outlined below.
Firstly, adolescents spend more time on the cyberspace at the expense of their families and friends. Teens have become are addicted to the social media and it has started taking a toll on their physical and emotional growth. Face-to-face interactions are very important in forming strong social bonds and the cyberspace has replaced this fundamental element of interaction with a screen and a keyboard.
