Classroom design and teaching methods that affect student development
As students have to spend large chunks of time in school, classrooms should be welcoming and warm to boost the student's morale. Additionally, classroom design can facilitate the learning experiences of students with special needs, including ADD, ADHD and specific learning disabilities. Classroom design has the power to impact students' well-being and motivation, either for better or for worse. Furthermore, when utilizing different teaching methods to fit the needs of every student makes a great deal of difference in student development. Every individual learns differently, and when teachers utilize only one teaching method, only a few students are developing thus leaving out the others who learn with different methods.
Introduction
The idea of having good teachers is not all that matters to ensure the success of students in classwork. A lot has to be done in regard to the classroom design to ensure that the students are comfortable enough to focus on their studies hence ensuring their success. Such comfort is dependent on the design of the classroom which involves the seating arrangement. In addition, the seating arrangement is a characteristic of the different seating methods available for schools to utilize. Different teachers believe in different seating arrangements hence making it easy for them to decide what is best for the students. Therefore, this research is aimed at answering the question as to why teachers prefer the different seating arrangements to make the classroom design and outline the various teaching methods that have proven to be a success.
Having developed the best classroom design, the teacher has the obligation of identifying the teaching methods that will best suit the students. Through the experience of most of the teachers, it becomes easy to decide on the teaching methods to use on different grades. Students have different learning abilities and, therefore, the teacher should ensure that they understand each of the students before deciding to employ a specific teaching method.
Therefore has been a lot of advancements in the world of technology hence resulting to changes in the manner in which teachers teach their students. E-learning has disrupted the belief that the classroom design can have an impact on the learning abilities of students because it does not provide students with the opportunity to be in a physical classroom. However, this technology is only available for higher learning which, constitutes a small percentage of the total number of people that have access to education. Therefore, the largest probability of people learns in physical classrooms hence making the classroom design and teaching methods an important topic of discussion. A lot of research has been done regarding the topic because the performance of the students is among the main reasons as to why teachers focus on the classroom design and teaching methods. These methods have been in the process of being improved over the years to determine what works for the student. Themes:
Seating arrangements
Research shows that the seating arrangement that a teacher decides to use is dependent on different aspects that vary from one teacher to another. In some cases, teachers believe that the experience that they have had with the students is sufficient enough to determine who sits where (Gremmen, van den Berg, Segers & Cillessen, 2016). Such experience is based on the manner in which a particular student performs in classwork while seated next to a certain student. Hence, the teacher will maximize on the seating arrangement to ensure that every student is advantaged in regard to scoring good grades. In addition, the gender and age of the teacher have a great impact on the seating arrangements. The view that the young teacher has towards the various teaching arrangements is different from what the older teachers think. Given the fact that a lot of research has been done on the best classroom designs, then most of the young teachers tend to use the modern methods.
On the other hand, the elderly teachers stick to the traditional methods since they have worked wonders before. In addition, the performance of students plays a substantial role in helping the teachers to determine the best positions that the students should sit. According to many teachers, they prefer to seat the students based on their performance rather allowing the bright learners to sit on the same side while the rest of the students occupies the other side. Such mixing has proven to be a key motivating factor of ensuring that the student helps one another whenever necessary (Dunlosky, Rawson, Marsh, Nathan & Willingham, 2013). They also find it easy to interact with the students on a one-on-one situation hence being able to assist them better as compared to a situation whereby they could have done it by addressing the same class as a whole. Given the fact that every student has a different learning ability from the rest of the class, then it is important for the teacher to seat them in a manner whereby they will be able to reach each of the students.
In addition, the position whereby a student is sat in the classroom can have a great impact on their performance. In some cases, a student would prefer to sit next to a friend that they are used to helping one another with classwork (Fernandes, Huang & Rinaldo, 2011). Therefore, if given the opportunity, then they will be able to have a tremendous change in their grades. This means that the teacher has the obligation of considering the student's preferences before forcing them to sit in a particular spot. However, this decision should be made based on educational purposes to prevent the students from distracting one another or the whole class. Such distractions can be a bother to the whole class hence affecting the learning abilities of the students. Also, bullying is another factor that teachers ought to consider (David, 2017). Regardless of how hard the teachers try to eradicate cases of bullying, they will always be there. Hence, the teachers should give many considerations to the students complains regarding their seating spot because it can have a negative on their performance. This means that the students seating position has a lot of impact on their performance.
Besides, the seating arrangements have an impact on the manner in which the students interact with one another and with the teachers. An example is a case of asking questions whenever the student feels that they have not fully understood a certain concept (Marx, Fuhrer & Hartig, 2013). In such cases, the student should be sat in a position whereby they will be able to ask questions freely. Also, in an open discussion forum, a student seate...
