The Hound of the BaskervillesBy: name13th August 2012 The Hound of the Baskerville is an interesting combination of a mystery novel and a tale. It is a Contrast between Normal or Paranormal and Legend or Reality which is a difficult distinction to make. There is an exciting aspect of supernatural conditions employed by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle which is contrary to Holmes inclinations. Apart from the mystery aspect Doyle has also used an aspect of social commentary so as to emphasize on gender and class among the characters and situations in the novel. Suspense is built in a traditional gothic style which revolves around the tale of the family curse, the mysterious creature and the background of the story. The mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville led to the appointment of Sherlock Holmes to solve the case. All the apparent clues suggested that it was a supernatural death caused by a mysterious creature due to a curse upon the Baskerville family. However Holmes did not succumb to the apparent situation and being a detective he went beyond what met the eye. The task assigned to Holmes was to ascertain if there was a threat to the new heir Sir Henry Baskerville who was to arrive from Canada. Upon his arrival he received a letter which warned him to keep away from The Moor. Not only was he warned, but another thing that happened was that his new shoe got stolen. But not only did he find his new shoe but the old one now got stolen. The initiative of writing a warning letter in itself was trying to build on the strong foundation to the Hound of the Baskerville Legend. However this did not deter Sir Henry and he went to the Baskerville hall. (Loy, 2000) Interesting things occurred at the Baskerville Hall. Sir Henry also romantically got involved with Ms. Staples who later after further investigation turned out to be Mrs. Staples, that is she was already married but it was not known. The key suspect in the plot at an initial stage was Barrymore the Butler, as he was seen with a candle signaling someone at the Moor. Here, at the outset it was perhaps believed that Barrymore was signaling his accomplice who might have been involved with him. However, it turned out to be exactly untrue.
