Step 1. Identify the problem for the decision.
The main problem pertains to the decision to attend college due to financial difficulties. My family is not well-off, and everyone, including the extended family, has worked, whether full-time or part-time, to make ends meet. It applies to all family members once the individual reaches the age of eighteen. The family also has debts secondary to loans. By entering college, I would have to leave all these bills to the rest of my family, and that would mean overworking my parents, who already had comorbidities at the time.
Step 2. Gather relevant information.
College Tuition Fee
According to the National Center for Education and Statistics (n.d.b), in the United States, between 2019 to 2020, on average, the tuition and miscellaneous fees for a four-year course in a public university or college are $9, 400 while it is $36 700 and $19, 100 at a private non-profit and private for-profit four-year course, respectively.
Residence Rates
The Grand Canyon University (2022b) offers residence and apartment rates that range from $2 075 to $3 500 per regular semester. Rent, electricity, internet, and water are included, but tax is excluded.
Meal Plans
The Grand Canyon University (2022b) offers meal plans that range from $250 to $2 700 per regular semester, but a minimum requirement, depending on the place of residence, applies per meal plan.
Financial Aid
This university offers several financial aids, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, on-campus and online scholarships, and federal and private student loans that can be granted if the student is eligible (Grand Canyon University, 2022a, 2022c).
Step 3. Identify the alternatives.
Praxis (2022) enumerated the alternatives to going to college, including the following:
1) The student may avail of scholarships from private or public organizations.;
2) The student may apply for part-time work while going to college simultaneously or do a full-time job while saving for college;
3) Entrepreneurship or opening a small business.;
4) The student may trade the saved money using the foreign stock exchange.;
5) The student may enroll online to be able to work during the day and study during the night.
