Name Lecturer Course Date Symbolism in story Scarlet Ibis The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is based on two brothers, one who wants a brother to play with but only to get a weakling. Hurst quotes “Doodle was about the craziest brother a boy ever had. Doodle was born when I was seven and was, from the start, a disappointment” (Hurst, par 3). This paper discusses the symbolism in the short story by identifying the coffin, scarlet ibis and storm as the symbols. The scarlet Ibis appears in the play as red and is a symbol of death; as it dies and is buried by Doodle the weak brother. It suggests that doodle will die the same way away from home which happens at the end of the story.
