Hurst quotes “Doodle was about the craziest brother a boy ever had. Doodle was born when I was seven and was, from the start, a disappointment” (Hurst, par 3). This paper discusses the symbolism in the short story by identifying the coffin, scarlet ibis and storm as the symbols. The scarlet Ibis appears in the play as red and is a symbol of death; as it dies and is buried by Doodle the weak brother.
