Monitoring of the employees by their employer has always been a necessity; however, with the advent and embracing of Internet in the places of work, in addition to the recent explosion of social media popularity, the need for monitoring of employee e-mailing by the employer has become essential. Therefore, in order for the employers to effectively manage their rights in monitoring their employees’ e-mails, they have formulated policies that prohibit the personal use of the company Internet as well as e-mail systems. In some instances, some employers even require a waiver of rights or contract signed by their employees regarding the extent to which the company should monitor their e-mailing activities upon the date of their employment.
From the employer’s perspective, allowing employees access to limitless e-mail at workplace might be a risky affair. This is because they can use it to increase their productivity as a result of increased work related research. However, it can potentially slow their productivity if they are allowed to spend their working hours writing and receiving personal e-mails. Therefore, this makes it necessary for the employer to ensure that employees use company e-mailing system for work related purposes only and not personal ones.
