Rose Of Versailles: It Is The Dawn Of A New Era!
Explicate a passage from a manga or anime that we have read or watched thus far (Astro Boy, Princess Knight, Tatsumi Yoshihiro, Rose of Versailles). In doing so, you must pay attention to three things.
One: the thematic content of the passage. What is it explicitly about? Is there anything from a different part of the story that you need to know to understand this part?
Two: How do the formal aspects of the artistry work to convey the content? (Among things you might consider here are the following: panel size and shape, special effects, lettering, word-image ratio, shading, shot angle, shot selection, what is being shown and what is not being shown, interruptions to the narrative.)
Three: So what? Why should we care? What underlying or bigger picture issues does it address? How it is related to the history of the time? Is it explicitly or implicitly advocating for a change in society? Does it reflect something about the society in which it was written. (If you do not know much about Japanese history, you may find it helpful to study some basics of Japanese history, but you may also have gleaned some from our discussions in class and from our other readings.)
