According to Richard Wilkinson, societies that have a huge disparity in income between the rich and the poor are countered by many social problems. He says that income differences basically brings about division and also corrodes social ties. Because of this disparity, many social evils arise as a result. He postulates that the authorities that are mandated to address such issues are very expensive thus making the situation worse. According to him, the difference in income corrodes both trust and morality that should be observed by all human beings because he notes that this problem affects both the rich and the poor. He postulates that all this is caused by competition for status by people. He also says this disparity has brought about social hierarchy which has led to increased conflicts among people.
