Article 1:
Roberts, L., & Termuehlen, G. (2021, December 27). Special Report: Ethical Decision-Making in Contemporary Psychiatric Practice—An Evolving Challenge. Retrieved from Psychnews.psychiatryonline.org: https://psychnews.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.pn.2022.1.22
This article focuses primarily on psychiatric practice and the various ethical considerations arising in today's context. The author in this article has discussed several issues such as the neuroscience revolution, novel tools and treatments, and the digital revolution, to name a few. Nonetheless, one of the most interesting discussions was the part on euthanasia. In line with this, the authors started their discussion on euthanasia by giving the basic facts and information about this practice. This was followed by the controversy of its usage in the field of psychiatry and some of the discussions circulating it.
Specifically, the author noted how the topic of euthanasia has been growing and becoming more controversial (and debated) over the practice of psychology. Before, the practice and the dilemma over this practice were limited to physical illnesses, which treat "reasonable foreseeable natural death," or those deemed to be physical burdens on the part of patients, which renders them incapable of doing anything. Today, however, there were controversial discussions about its applicability in psychiatric illnesses that severely affects the faculty and consciousness of an individual, especially in European countries. Nonetheless, the authors noted that the American Psychological Association released its statement in 2016, noting that "a psychiatrist should not prescribe or administer any intervention to a non-terminally ill person for the purpose of causing death."
The author believes that this article is only a general overview of the use of euthanasia in the world. Despite its capacity to give information to its readers, there is a lot of information that must be included.
First, the article seems to be outdated despite being published just last year, in December 2021. The authors said that there were concerning reports about the possible expansion of euthanasia on psychiatric illnesses. This was exemplified explicitly with this quote "Concerning data have been reported regarding the use of assisted dying and euthanasia in some European countries for individuals with psychiatric and neurocognitive disorders." However, there were reports of countries like Canada imposing laws that legally allowed its use for psychological illnesses as early as June 1, 2021 CITATION Kom21 \l 1033 (Komrad, 2021). In line with this, I believe that this lack of update is also one of the weakest points of this article, especially since highly controversial issues must always be up-to-date.
Second, I believe that the article is neutral and professional in terms of its tone. Upon a perusal of the various arguments by the author, it is clear that there was n...
