Literacy as Life Journal
Traditionally, literacy implies an individual’s capacity to read and write. It is an essential skill for people as they go about their day-to-day activities. As an educator, I had a first-hand experience of literacy as life by making connections between child’s educational outcomes and their parent’s literacy levels. Through this experience, I witnessed an explicit connection to my understanding of literacy as life. Less literate parents had a slight predisposition to create literacy-rich home environments to improve their children’s educational outcomes. In this way, less educated parents attributed less significance to their children’s literacy development, felt a sense of helplessness in enhancing that development, and were less able to improve that development. On the other hand, educated parents placed a high value on their children’s ability to read and write. The parents also felt capable of offering literacy experiences for their children because they are literate themselves. Literate parents encouraged their children to read and view various texts, including novels, comics, newspapers, instructions, recipes, email, magazines, and timetables. Therefore, I concluded that a child’s educational attainment and performance are directly linked to their parent’s literacy levels.
At a personal level, this experience made me sympathize with children’s different educational attainment. I understood that various factors come into play in relation to a child’s performance in school. In this vein, education should be tailored in a way to ensure it captures diverse children’s home environments as some come from less literate or illiterate backgrounds, thus undermining their capacity to compete at the same level as their peers. As an educator, this experience empowered me to seek to understand and document parental perceptions on literacy as well as explore the link between parental educational levels and their insights into emergent literacy. If educational interventions are to be successful, educators should take into account compatibility between literacy theory and that of the guardians and parents. Understanding parental perceptions, particularly concerning their literacy levels, would be crucial in assisting educators fashion literacy interventions for youngsters and adults, both outside and inside of school environments.
I will move from empathy to action by creating meaning...
