The narrator in Apology is Socrates. He was giving an apology before the Athenian Council. It is a defense where for Socrates not recognizing the gods that the state recognized. This was a grave offense in ancient Greece and was punishable by death. Therefore, Plato's republic's occasion is self-defense for corrupting the youths and disrespecting the gods of the land. It was a judgment occasion. Socrates was speaking with the Athenian Council responsible for delivering verdicts to people who disobey the land laws.
