Select either a not-for-profit organization/chapter of an organization or organizations that employ younger workers (e.g., fast food restaurants, retail, etc.) to analyze. Students shall conduct background research on the organization, its purpose, and its goals. Contact the executive director to determine his or her willingness to work with you on the project. Prepare a questionnaire to determine the key team challenges experienced by the organization. At a minimum, the questions should address team objectives, authority, responsibility, learning, and decision-making, focusing on the unique aspects of these items within a not-for-profit environment. Share this questionnaire with the class during week 2. Be certain to compare and contrast the different questionnaires from your fellow students. Schedule a time to conduct an interview with the organization's manager, using the questionnaire developed in (b). Afterwards, compile the notes from the interview in an organized format, focusing on areas needing improvement. Begin researching suggestions for the resolution of challenges faced by the not-for-profit team. Use at least five peer-reviewed sources to support your suggestions. Compile the suggestions in a concise, professional report for presentation to the executive director. Include all references in the report. ActionAid organization was initially founded in the year 1972 with its main aim being child sponsorship with the primary focus being the child education. The company is a non-profit making organization and is available in more than 40 nations including in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Caribbean. Its main headquarters is based in South Africa and organizes its operations on the basis of regions they are in. the various regions has instigated their headquarters where the operations of the branch is coordinated.
Currently, the focus has been shifted from the company being British based and is now well known internationally as an international organization that combats poverty globally and works hand in hand with the marginalized areas. The corporation enables the marginalized areas to promote, recognize and secure the imminent rights and ensure that the development is within control. The mission of the organization is to ensure that the poor, less fortunate and the rejected individuals in the society are able to access their rights in order to eradicate injustices in the society and also poverty eradication. For this mission to be well achieved and with ease, ActionAid is involved in the awareness of gender equality and women`s rights, food rights, education, conflict and emergency, HIV and AIDS and also the corporate accountability.
The corporation has been trying to eradicate poverty in the stricken nations worldwide in over 30 years. The organization is non-religious and therefore can attend to any individual from any religious group without fear and/or favor. It is also not politically affiliated and therefore its activities may not be perceived as being infringed by a given political side. The campaigns fostered by the charitable organization lobbies against causes of poverty in the hunger stricken nations and also analyze the mistreatment the people face from the government, international institutions and the various companies. The organization works hand in hand with the communities in the affected areas in order to come up with long term solutions on how to make use of the opportunities available for them. In most cases, the improvement is aimed on facilities like water systems, wells, health centres and schools which will go a long way in preventing sprouting of poverty.
The research was conducted on the ActionAid organization and several of its executive directors were interviewed and also questionnaires distributed to them in order to fill the relevant information. From the information gathered, the analysis provided that the main objectives of the organization is to rehabilitate individuals who were left homeless by war, enhances gender equity among citizens in a given region, provide education to the neglected members of the society and also fights for children and women`s rights which are usually ignored and are discriminated. The objectives of the corporation provide that justice is maintained and nobody is discriminated by any means.
The organization of ActionAid is administered at the headquarters in South Africa but its main regional activities are authorized by the regional headquarters. For instance, the distribution of resources to the afflicted areas is done at the regional headquarters; food, clothing and site for shelter is designed at this place. As finance is from the main headquarters, thus the regional headquarters are supposed to provide the outline of how the finance was used and also provide them with the foreseeable calamity that may be fall the region in order to acquaint themselves with the relevant finances. In addition, responsibilities are distributed to the members available in the region of the tragedy or calamity. As such, the corporation ensures that various departments available in profit making organization are also availed in the organization. For instance, accounting, finance and even the human resource management department is well curtailed in the regional organization.
Consequently, the learning process of the staff is continuous. This is due to the change that is imminent in the contemporary world. As such, individuals are educated on the impending calamities and how to handle such impetus. In most cases, the education is on how to perform first aid on the affected individuals and as such encompasses the new traits of dealing with the calamity. Where the situation is quite alarming and needs urgent attention, decision making should be done by the team members on the site of incident. This does not imply that all the decisions should be undertaken at the grass root level but long term decision making is done at headquarters of the organization. In essence, the decision made by the team members should be reported to the headquarters in order to form a coercive opinion on the strategy taken buy the team members.
The decision making by the sub-ordinates should be in-line with that of the organization as a whole and this will enable ActionAid organization to realize its strategic goals. In the case where the decision undertaken negates the overall strategic plan for the organization, the withdrawal of the activity by the management can be done with ease. Only short term decision making is implemented by the sub-ordinates in the regional areas while the long term ones are provided at the headquarters. The strategic goal of the organization is to eradicate inequality, injustices and alienate poverty from the world.
Unlike the case of the profit making organization, ActionAid focus is only on the welfare of the individuals and do not focus on the institutions` well being. For instance, decision making in profit making organization is based on maximizing the shareholders wealth and as such increasing the company`s profits. The staff is required to undergo learning on the marketing strategies, production mixes and also the investor and customer relations. All these aimed at increasing the company`s output in order to realize the maximum profits for the company. Moreover, the jurisdiction organization portrayed by the profit making companies endeavors to increase the efficiency of the firm who in turn increases the profit outlay of the company. The risk management department is involved in the mitigation of risk in order to ensure that the company does not incur any additional costs from the materializing of the risks. All these are contrary to the operations of the not-for-profit making organizations. ActionAid is financed by the donors and the well wishers as it does not engage in any business to realize the funds for financing the organization.
Despite all these, management should assert with the distinctive aspects that are experienced in the non-profit making organizations and especially ActionAid institution: accountability governance and ethics, limited public understanding of the institutions main intents, durability and impact of the results, competition/crowded market place and lack of human and volunteer services. Moreover the measurement of the individuals` satisfactions seems to be quite elusive as there is no direct alternative to compare with.
Ethical and Accountable Governance is the major challenge ActionAid faces in its operations. In essence, the establishment of policies, structures and processes should be undertaken in order to perform inherent choices where viable. The maintenance of the ethical behavior among the staff in order to meet the stipulated standards is wanting. As such, ActionAid organization instills its staff to uphold the highest integrity but this cannot be met with majority upholding it.
