More Management Techniques
Of the three secrets to becoming a One Minute Manager, I think that only two of them can be done in a group - the one minute goal setting and one minute praise. Goal setting is of course very important in order to avoid confusion and wrongful assumption. It helps employees understand what is expected of them and they never have to guess how their performance is being judged ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "ISBN" : "0425098478", "author" : [ { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Blanchard", "given" : "Kenneth", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" }, { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Johnson", "given" : "Spencer", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" } ], "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "1982" ] ] }, "publisher" : "Berkeley Press", "publisher-place" : "New York", "title" : "One Minute Manager", "type" : "book" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=e0f1594c-9d57-42f9-b025-096b6396dc08" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "manualFormatting" : "(Blanchard & Johnson, 1982, p.16)", "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Blanchard & Johnson, 1982)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" }(Blanchard & Johnson, 1982, p.16). "Defining organizational goals helps to conceptualize and articulate the future direction of the organization, thus allowing those responsible for setting that direction to develop a common understanding of where the organization is heading" ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "URL" : "http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fe577", "accessed" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2012", "3", "6" ] ] }, "author" : [ { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Cothran", "given" : "Henry M.", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" }, { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Wysocki", "given" : "Allen F.", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : "" } ], "container-title" : "University of Florida", "id" : "ITEM-1", "issued" : { "date-parts" : [ [ "2012" ] ] }, "title" : "Developing SMART Goals for Your Organization", "type" : "webpage" }, "uris" : [ "/documents/?uuid=c0bd87ba-a3d8-4cb5-8bb3-963292ca1e6c" ] } ], "mendeley" : { "previouslyFormattedCitation" : "(Cothran & Wysocki, 2012)" }, "properties" : { "noteIndex" : 0 }, "schema" : "https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json" }(Cothran & Wysocki, 2012). From this statement, we can already see that while the One Minute Manager is referring to individual goal setting, it is clear that team goal setting is also given importance in order for different employees to understand how their job helps in the achievement of team goals. This can also serve as a way of motivating employees because they know their efforts are important.
While I agree that goal setting is important, my question is, how are these goals presented by the One Minute Manager? Other leadership references state that goals should be SMART - specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound whereas in the One Minute Manager goals "should take no more than 250 words to express…[and] anyone [should] be able to read it in one minute" ADDIN CSL_CITATION { "citationItems" : [ { "id" : "ITEM-1", "itemData" : { "ISBN" : "0425098478", "author" : [ { "dropping-particle" : "", "family" : "Blanchard", "given" : "Kenneth", "non-dropping-particle" : "", "parse-names" : false, "suffix" : ...
