Dorine is Mariane's maid who commentates during the play and is a manipulator, but she also seeks to reveal Tartuffe's hypocrisy and is not afraid to confront others. Mariane tells Madame Pernelle, "You see him as a saint. I'm far less awed; In fact, I see right through him. He's a fraud" (Scene 1, p.5). Elmire is Orgon's second wife, and Tartuffe, the hypocrite influence Orgon. Elmire is loyal to her husband despite his flaws. Elmire tells her brother Cléante, "I saw my husband coming. I think I'd best Go upstairs now and take a little rest" (Scene 3, p. 9). Dorine and Elmire wanted Orgon to realize Tartuffe's hypocrisy, but she did not act freely as Dorine as she did not want to upset her husband. Mariane is Orgon's daught...
