Midaq Alley and Universal Values Parallelism
Introduction
Cultures and values in every region differ in one way or another. This is mainly due to conflicting ways of life. However, other individuals engage in some behaviors in situations that make the desperate. Others however don't stop to insist that their lives are "hard". Come to think of it, life has never been easy. In short every person has one way or another to justify their actions. To cut the story short, I chose this theme as I had particular interest in outlining the difference in what goes on in Egypt and the outside world, in the Middle East and the universe. This will give the account on what transpires in Egypt using the book Midaq Alley.
Midaq Alley is an Egyptian book published in 1947 using the Arabic dialect by Naguib Mahfouz. Major events in the book take place in Cairo's neighborhood, Gamaliya. The events that surround the activities and the individuals in the novel are clearly described. Each occasion presents a new theme and idea. The book consists of one main plot and consequent subplots in its narration. The novel clearly represents different views between the events in Cairo, Middle East and the outside world. This is not only seen in the individual characters but also in the social nature depicted in Cairo. Furthermore, the political arena of Cairo as outlined in the novel is completely different to what is expected as per other countries. This paper will analyze the parallelism between what happens in Cairo and the outside world. The body will be divided into three parts. These subsections will discuss the levels in individual, social and political.
Individual Parallelism
The novel depicts dissatisfaction in the characters. One is left wondering why there are high levels in dissatisfaction in the status quo. Are their actions justified or are the characters doings tied to some event in their live? For example, the young characters in Madaq Alley are desperate to leave the place with a notion of escaping poverty. It is this poverty that has engulfed the whole of the region that makes them take these necessary steps. Furthermore, most of the novel depicts a story of ordinary individuals who have to struggle with the day to day life problems that come their way. In between their problems, they are overcome by temptations that seem to be an easy way to richness and glorious life. They therefore go ahead and make big steps in their lives in order for them to make their lives better. However, even though they are faced with poverty, these steps are so drastic and bring about the aspect of greed. They only look at a straight way too success and don't believe that they come work hard and still get to their successful destination in life.
The greed is seen when Hamida went ahead to get sexually engaged with Mr. Alwan despite the fact that she was engaged to Abbas, her fiancé. She wanted more money that could satisfy all her financial needs, something that Abbas could not give her. Her greed for money is what leads her to engage in prostitution. It is seen that she fancied nice clothes, expensive jewelry and the only way she could keep up with all her needs was to get her an easy way out, Mr. Alwan. She couldn't help but escape and lie to Aswan in the...
