Church and state are two distinct entities. There is a defined distance relationship existing between a nation state and an organized religion. This distance in the relationship is what separates church from state (Simmons & Governors State University, 1999). This paper seeks to discuss a possibility for a true separation between church and state and whether this separation truly exists.
Even though the separation of church and state exists in various countries, different degrees of separation are applicable depending on the existing legal structures and views on the role of religion in society. The two entities interact independently. Religion plays a vital role in public life; however, there are different beliefs that exist in the society. Behaviors and beliefs of the Mormons, Amish, and believers of Islam are distinct and all of them exist in a society. These beliefs have conflicting interest and therefore separation of the church from the state is inevitable (Simmons & Governors State University, 1999).
In cases where there is no separation, there is a possible prohibition of other religious practices, which amounts to religious discrimination and deprivation of freedom of and from religion. This is against human fundamental rights. However, separation of church and state is connected to concepts of theocracy and secularism. Secularism seeks separation of government and religion and doing away with religious discrimination. This is why separation of church and state should exist: it ads democracy and protects religious rights of the minorities (Simmons & Governors State University, 1999).
Conclusively, I feel there is a true separation of church and state. This is because there are varying religious practices allowed in the country. Different religions: Christianity, Islam, Hindu are publicly practiced and freedom of and from religion is also exercised fully. Where...
