According to Julio who is the narrator and forms the reader`s center of conscience, Exile refers to a prison while identity is the distinctiveness that a person gets while in a given place. Julio feels that when a person is at home, his/her heart will feel safe as opposed to when a person is in exile whereby a person is denied freedom. Julio was not able to get a suitable identity while living in Spain and the new identity that tried to emerge failed to become conspicuous as initially desired. When a person is in exile, such a person is generally deprived off the freedom that he/could have otherwise enjoyed when at home; such a person also losses identity thus making it very hard for him to cope with the local population.
