The term insurgent is used denotatively in the novel. A critical analysis of the plot and characterization between chapters 25 and 47 in the book indicates that an insurgent is an individual revolting against established norms, the government, or civil authority. For example, one of the primary protagonists, Tris and her brother and boyfriend, runs against the authorities. Cara's remarks that "we risked our lives by defecting from our factions and we will risk them again to save our fraction from itself" alludes to insurgence (Roth, 2014, p.409).
