Discussion The Problem: Examples and Statistics According to the UN report, food scarcity is a leading problem since the COVID-19 outbreak. The global pandemic pushed more than 122 million people worldwide into hunger since 2019. The ‘State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI)’ report confirmed that the ‘UN’s Sustainability Development Goals (SDG)’ to end hunger in 2030 would remain unaccomplished due to the macro-environmental factors and geopolitical episodes (WHO, 2023). For instance, Russia-Ukraine warfare is a post-pandemic geopolitical cause disrupting the agricultural activities and food supply in underdeveloped nations. The conflict increased food scarcity due to unfavorable global policies and agendas to win the power struggle (Paudel et al., 2023). According to Alabi and Ngwenyama (2023), the COVID-19 outbreak initiated complexities in global food supply chains (GFSCs), paralyzing farmers and food manufacturers to satisfy rising demand. The authors used the United States of America (US) and Canada as the fundamental examples of GFSC disruption due to the pandemic. The research found that global lockdowns, social distancing, and poor industrialization in the two countries influenced GFSC sustainability, increasing scarcity among 122 million people and pushing the SDG timeline further for the UN (Alabi & Ngwenyama, 2023). The examples and statistics centralize food scarcity as a primary ecological concern for the globalized society. Challenges with Intercultural Communication and Problem Complexity Intercultural communication challenges contribute to transforming food scarcity as a complex issue in a globalized society. According to Samovar et al. (2017), intercultural communication reduces cultural barriers to meeting geopolitical agreements and economic commitments between countries. International trade reduced barriers to unnecessary migrations to urban countries for robust opportunities, advanced amenities, and improved lifestyle choices. As a result, the GFSC distribution experienced imbalances, leading to food scarcity in rural regions or developing countries in the long run. The research further argued that the international government and social agencies became more sensitive towards rising demands in urban areas, resulting in ignorance of rural necessities of food, water, and healthcare (Samovar et al., 2017). Ayyub et al. (2024) supported the findings by discussing the infusion of food ethnicities in developed countries, positioning intercultural communication to fuel food scarcity.
