Is It Ethical to Eat Unhealthily?
People’s food intake comprises the food systems, which are composed of elements such as the workforce, infrastructures, environment, institutions, and other activities associated with food. These activities include manufacturing, dispensation, overall preparation, food consumption, and environmental and socio-economic factors. Due to the challenging way to manage and maintain food systems, it is unethical to eat unhealthily (Fanzo, 2018). However, unhealthy eating can be an option or a forced choice. While it is true that many people eat unhealthily autonomously, many people eat unhealthily without autonomy. These are the people who lack resources, information, and stable food preferences. The main factor in an unhealthy eating habit without autonomy is the inefficient food system (Barnhill et al., 2014). Unhealthy diets due to inefficient food systems result in a rise in the global burden of disease. Consequently, for reasons other than inefficient food systems, unhealthy diets contribute to the global burden of disease. These are reflected with the malnutrition statistics, where around 800 million people suffer from undernourishment worldwide. Among these, 155 million are children less than five-years-old. Moreover, an additional 2.1 billion people are overweight or obese (Fanzo, 2018). On the other hand, the main factor in an unhealthy eating habit without autonomy is self-discipline. Individual autonomy allows a person to make rational choices and to eat unhealthily by consuming more processed foods contribute to the increasing inefficiency of the food systems by allowing the domination of processed food companies, which in turn, result in the challenging situation of those people who eat unhealthily without individual autonomy (Fanzo, 2015).
