1 Lucy initially goes to see a doctor since she suffered from chronically recurrent Suppurative rhinitis. Moreover, she had lost her sense of smell and suffered from a combination of depression and olfactory hallucinations of the smell of "burnt pudding," which Freud identifies as the cause of her hysteria.
She is referred to Freud after unsuccessful treatment for nine weeks by Freud's colleague. The physician realized that her trouble was caused by caries of the ethmoid. Furthermore, Lucy complained of new establishing symptoms and could no longer be referred to local affections.
2 Freud Sigmund uses the title civilization and its discontents to refer to a situation of conflict between the desire for individuality and societal expectations. Furthermore, Sigmund describes this conflict as the tension between an individual wanting freedom and opposing civil values of conformity and suppressing personal instincts.
