The Significance of Black History Month
Introduction
Black History Month is normally commemorated yearly in the month of February. The day normally honors all the Afro –Americans who have contributed positive changes in the society within a diverse perspective. These black Americans left a memorable mark in the hearts of many people. This is because the majority of them had to stay alone within many months of stand outs to achieve what we enjoy today. They opened the eyes of people and shed light unto them. This was mostly to the group of people who thought differently about people’s colors. This paper discusses the significance of black history month.
The majority of the present conveniences and technologies were founded by these blacks. Hence, it is important to acknowledge these individuals in a similar way to what any other person has accomplished within the human race. Additionally, the month highlights the injustices which were carried out during the era of slavery. It also discusses people who fought very hard to overcome it. An example of an icon within the whole black history is Martin Luther King Jr. He is the perfect representation of the Black History Month. This is because he was responsible for advocacy of always fighting hate with love (Hornsby, 2011).
The month represents a moment for the country to recognize and appreciate the key achievements and important figures within the history of African-Americans. On the contrary, in the present American society where there is a broad representation of the blacks within the government, common culture, and other areas, the requirement for this commemoration has become questionable. The most significant step in the history of the blacks is that the nation is now headed by a president with African roots. This was a milestone in the struggle of the rights of blacks.
Despite the fact that the African-Americans have a substantial representation in government, film and other fields including athletics, it remains important to set one month aside to celebrate the various achievements of the blacks. Many people including author Raina Kelley have provided an argument that in deed, the month has to be celebrated. This is because it provides a connection between them and the struggles they underwent in their struggle for equality. The month also discusses the anticipated progress within the community of the blacks. Some people even argue that the month provides a setting for reclamation of the past events.
In addition, the month is normally very efficient in remembering the narratives of the ancestors. It also integrates these narratives into the present history. The month’s significance can be illustrated in terms of discussing the obstacles encountered black Americans currently. In the real sense, there is no sense for individuals being skeptical on the Black History Month availability. It makes a lot of sense if people concentrated on utilizing the month for matters which ought to be discussed and solved within the remaining days of the year. Examples of the issues which should be debated include institutionalized poverty, underperforming performance of public schools in cities, disparities in healthcare, and lastly discrimination within the job market. The day provides the measurement of the nature of the told stories in relation to the work expected to be done.
The current president of America also accepts the fact that the month should be commemorated. The president provides an argument that the month should be celebrated in order to think about how far people have come as a country and the existing obstacles.
Within the black history volume, a lot remains undocumented. Thus, the month provides an opportunity for ambition and success. This makes sure that the future generations will be aware of what happened to do away with unjust past and construct a future full of hope and justice. On the other hand, the White House also commemorated the period. It does this through the adoption of distinct themes for the period year after year. A good example is the 2010 theme which was about economic empo...
