Given the two articles linked below that present opposing sides of an issue (mandatory uniforms in schools vs. some kind of ‘dress code’), construct your own 2 page Rogerian argument essay in which you attempt to arrive at a concrete, workable solution or "middle ground." The essay should contain the following components: ❒ 1. An introduction that accurately presents both sources (i.e., author, title, year of publication, and their relative position in the debate), as well as your middle ground thesis statement. ❒ 2. A body paragraph that summarizes the pro-uniform rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Anderson). ❒ 3. A body paragraph that summarizes the anti-uniform/pro-dress code rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Deane). ❒ 4. A body paragraph that critically compares and contrasts both sides of the debate. ❒ 5. A conclusion that further develops your proposed middle-ground solution and demonstrates how it satisfies both sides of the debate. In Anderson’s (2002) article “School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies,” he condensed two years’ worth of arguments to justify the establishment of obligatory school uniforms in the educational setting. Samantha Deane’s (2015) article “Dressing Diversity: “Difference in Political Opinion and the Case of School Uniforms” proposes abolishing uniform mandates and replacing them with dress standards that allow for student variety. There are competing viewpoints on this issue. Some people argue for lax clothing regulations, while others advocate for tight limits. Society can take both sides’ concerns into account and come up with a solution that incorporates dress regulations that prohibit rude and provocative clothes while still providing a space for people to express themselves through different designs and colors. Pro-Uniform Rationale Summary School uniform has many advantages for students. According to Anderson (2002), a school dress code “promotes safety-it makes it easier to identify strangers in schools” (5). The discipline of the uniform requirements is what creates a uniform atmosphere lacking bothersome distractions and tensions over class differences, which are readily visible via the students’ clothes.
