5 marks are allotted for an original argument of your own, for or against Elder's thesis.
NOTE 1: Many students new to writing philosophy papers mistake an example for an argument. An example supports an argument that has already been made, whereas an original argument gives a new reason for the same conclusion.
i.e. If an author writes: "You shouldn't eat junk food because it is not healthy." and you add "My cousin ate junk food and he is unhealthy", this is not a new argument, it is an example of what the author is describing. Whereas, if you say "If you eat junk food your teeth will fall out and you will lose your beautiful smile." Now, you have a new reason/argument for the same conclusion 'Don't eat junk food'.
NOTE 2: Elder considers the views of other philosophers in the paper and goes on to show how these views are incorrect or insufficient. Be careful not to confuse the presentation of these views with the author's own view in this paper.

In her philosophical exploration titled “Excellent Online Friendships: "An Aristotelian Defense of Social Media,” Alexis Elder (2014) conducts an in-depth analysis of the essence of the friendships formed through the social media. According to Elder, Aristotle’s criteria for a genuine friendship can also be successfully met in the digital sphere even though it provides several constraints to forming real bonds. To support this statement, Elder addresses the “Poverty of Communication Objection” which claims that the online communication is not deep and rich enough to create close friendships.
According to Elder (2014), Aristotle’s theory of friendship is grounded in the notion of shared activities, virtuous traits, and reciprocal goodwill as the basic elements. In contrast, Elder (2014) argues that although the traditional definitions of Aristotle's philosophy emphasize physical proximity and human interaction, these can still hold true because they can be adapted to the unique characteristics of digital communication. Making point of content and quality of interactions instead of medium they are held, Elder (2014) claims that online relationships can fulfill the necessary components of being real relationships and mutual support.
