As one walks down the streets in town or in the city, especially during the weekend, one is likely to meet many young people dressed in expensive fashion, holding technological gadgets as they enter and exit shopping malls and restaurants. These young people of the ages 17 - 35 years are full of enthusiasm for life. Some drive flashy expensive cars, most of which belongs to their parents. All that is seen in them is glamour and ego. In the twenty first century, this group of people is acknowledged as the Generation Y; others would call it the millennial. Generation Y only knows the world as a technology hub with facilities such as remote control, mobile phones, cable TV, internet or computer. It is a self-centered generation where people do not care about politics, rebellions music, or issues to do with Wall Street. Instead, they focus more on things that excite and interest them, such as the internet, cell phones, and boosting their self-esteem. The girls are into expensive pocketbooks, trendy skinny jeans and collections of shoes, which seem to be a ‘must have thing’ for each one of them. It is believed that the girls in Generation Y own more stuff than the girls of all other generations combined. These things are the hallmark for their pride. Among those in this generation, no one can afford to ignore his/her looks because that is what determines social ties especially among peer groups. Cars also play an important role in promoting one’s self esteem in the Generation Y. This is especially among the boys, who instead of using public means of transportation, they drive in expensive cars such as Lexus, Mercedes, and Mazda, most of which are bought by their parents. Materialism is the center stage of life among the Generation Y, enhancing their self-esteem, which is a good thing.
