As you learned in this unit, a Rogerian argument is one that presents two sides of a debate and argues for a solution that will satisfy both sides. Given the two articles linked below that present opposing sides of an issue (mandatory uniforms in schools vs. some kind of ‘dress code’), construct your own 2-3 page Rogerian argument essay in which you attempt to arrive at a concrete, workable solution or "middle ground." The essay should contain the following components:
❒ 1. An introduction that accurately presents both sources (i.e., author, title, year of publication, and their relative position in the debate), as well as your middle ground thesis statement.
❒ 2. A body paragraph that summarizes the pro-uniform rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Anderson).
❒ 3. A body paragraph that summarizes the anti-uniform/pro-dress code rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Deane).
❒ 4. A body paragraph that critically compares and contrasts both sides of the debate.
❒ 5. A conclusion that further develops your proposed middle-ground solution and demonstrates how it satisfies both sides of the debate.

School uniform remains one of the most-discussed topics concerning education, involving the two engaging yet contrasting opinions. In his article “School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies”, Wendell Anderson (2002) argues that clothes which are worn in schools should be nonpreferred enabling all students to wear school uniforms. Conversely, Samantha Deane’s (2015) “Dressing Diversity: Politics of Difference and the Case of School Uniforms” proves that it is high time to abandon the practice of mandatory uniforms, while it is possible to consider making a decision to wear formal dress code that is less restrictive and more tolerant to certain cultural distinctions. This essay seeks a middle ground, proposing a solution that combines the benefits of both positions: a dual policy that maintains the benefits of wearing a uniform while being flexible on styles and colors that acknowledge people's and cultures' individuality.
According to Anderson (2022), there are so many unique advantages that are often linked to school uniforms which are mandatory. Another strength is that the process decreases the degree of socioeconomic differentiation between learners. Uniforms remove distinguishing factors such as the rich and the poor, thereby balancing the odds on the playground which results in low chances of students being bullied by other children. Moreover, through wearing of uniforms there is increased school identity or spirit, hence promoting unity among people. This feeling of togetherness can bring about the positive results such as better grades and less disruptive conduct. Anderson (2002) argues that first, owing to wearing a uniform, a student feels like being in a community, which fosters school spirit and unity, hence, spurs on better performance, and negates antisocial behaviors.
In this respect, while Deane's article underlines arguments on relative issue of implementation of school uniforms it gives a splendid outline on the issue of fair dress code.
