SUMMARY OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES
The purpose of the constitution is to provide an outline that guides the relationship between the citizens, the states, other people in the United States, and the United States federal government.
The congress which constitutes the House of Representatives and the Senate has the legislative power in the United States. The congress makes laws, amends and revokes them in the United States. Members of the House are chosen every two years and they should be over 25 years of age, while those of the senate are chosen every six years and they should be over 35 years of age. The House is headed by the speaker while the senate is headed by a president who is usually the vice president. All members of the congress should be citizens of the state they represent. Meetings of the congress should be held every year, and those members who do not attend are eligible to pay fines. The House is given responsibility over its elections, rules and determination of qualifications of its members as well as for their behavior while in office. Members of the congress are entitled to appropriate compensation by the United States treasury.
Members of the congress are free from arrest while in office except for cases such as violation of peace, felony or treason. During their time in office they need not hold office as civil officers in the United States. All bills relating to revenue are made by the House, and they, including other bills should be presented to the president for approval before they are passed as laws of the country. Powers bestowed upon the congress include; collection of taxes and duties, borrowing money on behalf of the United States, regulating trade within the states and other countries, among others. However, its powers are also limited; for instance, they can not take money from the US treasury without required permission, they have no powers to stop cases which have the doctrine of habeas corpus, they also can not pass a bill that punishes persons without giving them a chance to fair trial. Powers of the individual states are also limited to those which the congress approves of.
The president of the United States has the executive power bestowed upon him. He is to hold office for not more than four years, and before he does so, he has to take a solemn oath to abide by the requirements of the constitution.
