Compare and Contrast Men and Women in Healthcare Name: Institution: Course: Instructor: Date: Compare and Contrast Men and Women in Healthcare Introduction Healthcare, like other sectors, requires the services and inputs of both male and female professionals. Healthcare has undergone a revolution over the years regarding gender roles. The gender role revolution reflects the positive strides and advancement in healthcare. Male professionals have always been assigned major roles compared to their counterparts, probably because, historically, females have been disadvantaged in education (Anspach, 2010). Until recently, females were not prioritized in education as most communities regarded educating girls as a waste of time and money. Generally, the healthcare arena for a long time was a male-dominated sector, with males given leadership and other major roles, while females played assistive and supportive roles (Anspach, 2010). In some cases, the females were entirely excluded, an unfortunate gender discrimination in professional roles. We can trace this gender role discrimination to the education sector where some courses, for instance, health, science, and engineering, were preferred by males compared to females simply because of the societal attitude and not that females were lesser in intelligence quotient or capabilities. All the differences in the healthcare sector in matters of gender roles were a result of societal attitudes, traditions, and culture (Lopez, 2021). Nurses were nicknamed ''sisters'', a name that pushed away many male potential candidates (Lopez, 2021). On the other hand, pure medicine was perceived as a male cadre since it is a hard course. In a way, females were regarded as weak both physically and intellectually and hence allocated simple courses. A paradigm shift in roles in healthcare was realized with the change in societal attitudes that resulted in positive changes and revolutionized the shift. As a result, females were given equal education opportunities that opened the way for the careers of their choice. Additionally, the expansion of professional development brought about professional inclusion. The efforts in changing societal attitudes and empowering the girl child eventually yielded positive results known as the healthcare revolution. Therefore, this essay delves into the comparison and contrast of gender roles in healthcare both in the present and in the past so as we acknowledge the journey and appreciate where we are in terms of gender equity in healthcare. Comparison Efforts to promote gender equality in healthcare are the reason for the significant gains seen. Despite the imbalance in gender roles in healthcare, both male and female healthcare professionals offer incredible services. Therefore, females and males have continually put effort and are shinning in their capacities in the different healthcare cadres. The two gende...
