LaVecchia’s article on the remediation of the family's sitcom TV show series, it is entirely convincing that the popular TV series, Modern Family has played an essential role of rebranding and reviving family based shows. The author begins by providing evidence on how family TV shows had started to lose appeal to the target audience and network producers. The growing popularity of TV shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation was a clear sign that the focus had shifted to other livelihoods. LaVecchia takes a step further to provide an in-depth analysis on how Modern Family managed to portray a dramatic, comic and yet accurate reflection of a today’s contemporary modern family.
Lloyd’s Modern Family did not find the appeal to the consumers by completely transitioning from traditionalism to modernity. According to LaVecchia, the show is grounded on normative family dynamic. The author explores issues like heteronormative families. Two out of three families that feature in the movies are heterogeneous. On the same note, the typical non-pronounced family based norms continue to emerge through the show. For instance, the level of authority and respect depicted in the series is pretty close to what can be seen in a traditional family setting.
