It is the location of the 1967 police raid, which reflects the early stages of the LGBTQ civil rights struggle (LA Conservancy, 2024). Police captured 14 males, several of whom were battered and hauled outside. Six people were accused and charged with lewd behavior for same-sex kissing. The reason for choosing this monument is because it was the location of the first recognized LGBT civil rights protest in the country. It was one of the first national public homosexual rights rallies before the Stonewall riots in New York, as well as one of Southern California's first acknowledged public gay rights protests. The monument relates to the reading "Queer and Present Danger" by Goldsmith, Raditz, and Mendez. For example, the 'Black Cat' monument represents a history of LGBTQ+ oppression. LGBTQ+ people have a long history of protesting, facing police assault, and struggling for liberty, which is often neglected. Even during the raid at the bar, the protestors were not using the term 'homosexual' in their protest signs. Goldsmith et al.
