Action Plan
Now that you have defined your goals, objectives, strategies and tactics – your last step in the planning process is to focus on your action plan. An action plan defines who is going to be responsible for seeing that each strategy is achieved, and a timeline for achieving the strategy. In this process, you will be documenting accountability for implementation.
With accountability comes the necessity for reasonable timelines. Assigning tasks without a reasonable amount of time may in fact sabotage the planning implementation effort. Making sure that those assigned accountability are also empowered with resources (money, equipment, and people) and authority to follow through are critical. Likewise, it should be remembered that unless key personnel charged with implementing a strategy are pulled from their existing position, they will continue to have other daily responsibilities. You will need to balance day-to-day job functions along with how you will make assignments for the implementation of the plan.
When you developed your objectives, you were asked to also think of timeframes for reaching those objectives (weeks, months, years) – these will provide a starting point for developing your timeline for your action plan.
The format for your action plan will depend on the type of organization you are working with. What follows is an example for communicating your action plan. You are welcome to use the format on the next page or alter it to your own needs. Please add a table of content

All of the planning in the world will not matter if the plan is not successfully implemented. That is why many strategic plans gather dust on the shelf in corporate offices. The role of the manager is to see that the plan is implemented!
Accountability, incentives, rewards – these are all part of the motivation factors that employees will need to implement the plan. Commitment to follow through with the plan is the critical factor between success and failure.
The company executives must clearly define how they want the follow through to happen. What are the incentives and rewards, how/when will progress reports be completed to ensure accountability, and what are the consequences if timelines are not met?
What follows is an example of a progress report worksheet for implementing your plan. You are welcome to use the format on the next page or alter it to your own needs.
