Introduction
The assessment and determination of the connection between the marine's state changes and human pressure threaten the environment. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change has been the most significant threat to ocean ecosystems. According to Hwang (2020), the marine economy accounts for 2.7 trillion annually. Protecting the water bodies will benefit the entire world, especially the countries that directly benefit from the sea. Communication, quantifying, and demonstrating the effect of human activities on the interrelated components in time and space can help protect the marine ecosystem. The communities, education systems, political groups, and other organizations must spread the information about the water body.
Marine integrity has been compromised for the last two decades, causing severe damage. The marine and coastal environment users are the leading contributors of harmful substances to the water (Kasperson, 2020). It is up to the marine management to facilitate the safety of the marine water. Successful marine management requires the involvement of technical, historical, economic, political, and social factors. The selection of an excellent management tool is vital in ensuring the oceans no longer face further deterioration.
The aquaculture industry in Canada seems to be among the most beneficial marine economic products in the last decades. The country has been rated 20th on fish production, especially salmon. According to Kasperson (2020), the fish industry in Canada has been growing continuously because of its effective management method. The expansion of the region has majorly been through the Drivers-Pressure-State change-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework. The model includes drivers that local, regional and global economic and demographic factors that directly cause pressure to the environment, changing the quality of environmental functions. The change of state impacts the welfare of human communities and natural resources. The direct impact on human beings forces them to respond to compensate, adopt, alleviate or prevent the damage by changing drivers or pressure. The change process is mainly through the shift of human behavior. The paper will focus on how the DPSIR framework can help deal with the fish aquaculture in eastern Canada to ensure the marine environment maintains its good quality.
Method
The fish industry has been facing a decline for many years because of the carelessness of the people living in the coastal regions. Despite the small aquaculture industry in Canada, they are thriving in a few specific fish types, including the salmon (85%), the mussels (9%), and the other types that account for 3% of the fish products(Kasperson, 2020). Understanding the influence that leads to the expansion of the fish industry is significant in ensuring the industry remains at its best performance. The involvement of the DPSIR framework has made it possible to maintain the stability of the fish business in eastern Canada. The framework helps identify the environmental problem, cause, impact, and the best action to solve the problem.
Drivers
The expansion of Canada's fish business has different drivers that make it continue flourishing. The opportunities, market forces, reduced fish species, diseases, and resource availability are the main drivers of expanding fish production in Canada (Noakes, 2018). First, the market demand has been increasing due to the high world population pushing the fish farming leaders like Mowi brands to increase their production. Also, the climatic change has affected played a significant role in expanding the industry by allowing new species to the country's waterbody; thus, increasing the desire for farmers to invest in the different species. Moreover, the clients' demands have encouraged the leaders to think of ways to manage the needs pushing them to produce more fish.
Additionally, environmental concerns promote the need for quality fish. Most fish producers in Canada are responsible for ensuring the fish are produced in a human-friendly environment. The competitive advantage they have driven the managers towards growing the fish business. The desire to capture customers' attention pushes the investors to take advantage of the climatic change to develop other fish types beyond the common species in the area. Finally, the desire for increased resilience makes the farmers work hard to ensure they are consistent in their production to avoid losing their clients.
Pressure
Despite the availability of technical support and resources for expansion, the market and demand are essential before deciding to invest in a new fish species. The leaders must be keen to ensure they make the right decisions. The above aquaculture drivers in eastern Canada put pressure on the marine management leaders. The need to fulfill the farmers' different needs and the market makes them ensure expansion (Noakes, 2018).
