There are five aims of sentencing such as restitution, deterrence, rehabilitation, punishment, and incapacitation. Punishment is imposed to an offender based on the idea of an eye for an eye. It aims to impose punishment to a criminal based a crime he committed. Punishment aims to return an offender to what is considered as morally acceptable to the community. Besides that, deterrence aims to stop criminal activities from occurring again. It assists to deter individuals from committing more criminal because of what they just saw. It requires all criminals to consider advantages and disadvantages and derive appropriate decisions not to involve in crime.
Incapacitation refers to putting criminals in prison to hold them so that they should not commit more crime in the society. The idea is that if offenders are taken away from the society, they cannot involve in more crime in the society.
