Encryption refers to converting the information into byte codes to prevent unauthorized personnel from accessing it. In other words, authentication and encryption are effective ways to counteract unauthorized access and passive monitoring (“Impacts of Multipath Propagation,” n.d.). A wireless local-area network (WLAN) comprises a collocated group of electronic devices that are connected using radio transmissions instead of wired connections. Since radio transmissions penetrate walls and other solid objects, a WLAN without encryption is vulnerable to hacking through passive monitoring.
