Poem Stanza Analysis Student’s Name Institution Course Instructor Date Poem Stanza Analysis The poem Let America Be America Again was written by Langston Hughes. Hughes was an African American who lived in the United States between 1901 and 1967. During the time, racial discrimination was high, and it was characterized by segregation. Racism was so high that poets came up with statements like "home is where the hatred is" to signify that America was their home, yet it was filled with hatred (Adjetey, 2023, p. 58). People from other parts of the world struggled to receive the benefits of American citizenship during the period. The whole poem by Hughes expresses the need for America to change to accommodate different races so that it can be the country that people from other parts of the world desire to live in. The second stanza of the poem excellently illustrates the need that the poet has to make America a desirable nation for African Americans. The first line of the second stanza states, “Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed” (Hughes, n.d., stanza. 2). The line indicates that there is a desired state for America, but the country is far from getting to that state. Since America is a developed country, it is expected for individuals from third-world countries to desire to move to the United States. They know the country as a land of opportunities where they can move and become successful at achieving the American dream. However, history proves that this is not the reality.
