The United States’ immersion in Vietnam’s affairs in World War II and the Cold War is a result of historical patterns and traditions of the U.S. always being involved in world affairs. However, this is not all accurate, as the need to perpetuate world control and dominance through the spread of their political systems, ideals, and business interests shaped the United States’ similar views of the country being a candidate for self-government and economic opportunity, and at the backline in its defense and varying views of Vietnam being a threat to democracy due to communism during WWII and the Cold war.
The U.S. considered Vietnam a candidate for self-government and economic opportunity for other countries through the Open Door Trade. After gaining its independence and achieving national unity in 1776, the United States developed an image of being the guardian of democracy. Its idealism led to its push for self-government in the new world which had been divided along the lines of different colonizers arguing that the world could achieve collective security through peace shared by all.
