Summary
The assigned reading contains three texts which show society's views about women. The first text is about a woman who was considered a responsible mother and knows what is best for the son. Mencius's mother moved from one place to another in seek of the perfect environment for her son. Occasionally, she could teach her son important life lessons that helped him become an honorable man. When Mencius got married, he planned to take his wife back to her parents because he had seen her not dressed the right way. His mother advised him not to do so (Ebrey, 2009).
The second text outlines a woman who has destroyed her home due to being disrespectful. The husband chose not to divorce her due to the sake of their children. The letter outlines various behaviors expressed by the wife that is against society's beliefs. In their society, a woman is expected to submit to their husband and build a loving home (Ebrey, 2009).
The third text describes the virtues that a woman should learn as soon as they are born. A woman is expected to follow such virtues, and this enables them to become a respectful wife. The text outlines humility and devotion as the key admirable aspects that a woman should embrace (Ebrey, 2009).
Reflection
The reading is connected to the current topic because it shows the Chinese culture's views about women. Two of the texts explain the good virtues that a woman should possess. It is such virtues that make them respectful in society. The last text points out that whenever a woman who practices devotion and humility has never been disgraced in society. The text is an indication of the cultural expectations that define a good woman in Chinese culture. Once a woman has disobeyed such virtues, they are bound to disgrace themselves. The third text outlines that no woman has ever followed the virtues and disgraced themselves. This is indicating the importance of following cultural practices that uphold good morals among women.
