Introduction
The Social Security Act (SSA) was an act of Congress signed into law by President Roosevelt as part of the New Deal CITATION McK02 \l 1033 (McKenna, 2002). The Act was in response to the poverty that resulted from the Great Depression. As such, the Federal Government needed to provide the general public with social welfare that would protect them. This paper examines the SSA, it will attempt to determine its efficacy by examining its causes, participants and results CITATION Lar10 \l 1033 (DeWitt, 2010).
The SSA was in response to the problems of industrialization and Urbanization. These social constructs resulted in a large number of people lacking a mechanism that could protect them in case of loss of their jobs. The SSA was the first legislation that institutionalized social welfare in the US.
