Workplace Civility and Healthy Work Settings
The “Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory” is an insightful tool that assists individuals in assessing and determining the health status of their work environment. The 20 questions, rated 1 to 5, provide a comprehensive view of the interactions, support, and other structures constituting a healthy setting. Answering these questions enables one to introspect and reflect on diverse aspects of the workplace. After completing and tallying the results, the civility score for my organization was 89. Disaggregated results indicate that ten questions recorded a score of 5 each (completely true), nine scores of 4 (somewhat true), and 1 scored 3 (neutral). No question attracted the somewhat untrue or completely untrue with a rating of 2 and 1, respectively. As a result, these findings highlight the areas the establishment should improve to raise the overall tally from 89 to over 90, representing an extremely healthy working environment. Thus, this assessment explores strategies leaders can embrace to promote a desirable workplace environment.
Part 1: Work Environment Assessment
The work environment assessment results were 89, corresponding to the moderately healthy categorization ranging from 80 to 89. Such a high grading of workplace health indicates that the organization needs to improve in one or two areas to meet the minimum tally for the first cluster of highly healthy work environments that range from 90 to 100. However, several aspects of these results were notably surprising. For instance, marking the question about the reasonable nature of the workload and its manageability as completely true was startling, considering that I have experienced a burnout effect in the past. This experience was insufficient to deny the organization a score of 5, seeing that the management provided appropriate support to eradicate the fatigue and distribute duties in the following weeks. However, I felt the institution needed to boost its resources further, which attracted a score of 4. These funds and professional guidance should focus on the workers’ development and professional growth to ensure that they remain updated with the changing workplace dynamics. Although these two areas were surprising, the assessment confirmed that employees are somewhat satisfied, appropriately engaged, and display desirable morale. The motivations demonstrated by my colleagues in the inpatient and outpatient departments, including taking up more workload and covering for individuals on leave, highlight the high morale and commitment even before encountering this assessment. These outcomes arise from professional interactions, involvement in decision-making, and support.
The moderately healthy environment, represented by a score of 89, suggests that my workplace has desirable civility and health. Receiving such a high score indicates that the organization has streamlined fundamental relational and operational structures, promoting seamless interactions between varied stakeholders. According to Broome and Marshall (2021), relational coordination and skilled communication are critical components that facilitate the creation of supportive and healthy work settings in healthcare institutions. The authors emphasize that such an environment represents psychological, physical, and social wellness. In this context, respect and trust, valuing of the workforce, indiscriminate engagement, teamwork, and free expression of views represent key aspects that promote unity. As a result, the organization witnesses minimal internal conflict or incivility, which promotes inter and intra-professional collaborations. Such progress confirms why the assessment results are promising, requiring minimal strengthening to improve the organization’s health.
