Natural disasters like earthquakes and unpredictable and devastating. As means to emergency preparedness and disaster management, nurses can play a significant role in all levels of prevention. The three levels of prevention are primary, secondary, and tertiary (Kisling & Das, 2021). Nursing interventions at each of the levels are key especially following a disaster.
Primary interventions involve intervening before health effects occur. At this level, the nurse's intervention is to provide community education and lessons on the administration of first aid to prepare the community to recover from a potential disaster. This level of intervention occurs at the mitigation and preparedness phases of a disaster. Secondary prevention involves detecting and treating disease to slow or halt its progress as soon as possible. In Haiti, the nursing intervention at this level includes dressing changes. Given the extensive number of wounds and amputations, focusing on dressing changes minimizes further infections. This nursing intervention occurs at the response phase of a disaster in that the focus is to help survivors recover.
