Other than cognitive behavioral therapy, different therapy approaches can help the group therapy members adopt better ways of responding to stress. One approach that may be effective in this setting is behavioral therapy. The approach focuses on a person’s actions, which are dictated by past behavior, with the belief that once one changes how they respond to stress, they can develop new patterns, which are likely to prevent stress (Sulaiman, Malek, Fatini & Fahrudin, 2017, p. 235-236). The approach may work on Stephanie and Jolene, who tend to shut down once stressed. It would help them change this behavior by opening up and sharing what is bothering them with others. As a result, they get a different perspective on the issue affecting them, feel relieved and relaxed, and eventually shun stress.
Another approach the therapist can utilize is exposure therapy. Exposure therapy exposes an individual to their stress triggers, hoping that the more they get used to their fears, the less stressed they will be (Thompson-Hollands, Marx & Sloan, 2019, p. 102). In this setting, exposure therapy can expose the students to stressors such as exams, deadlines, procrastination of assignments, and the pressure of multitasking between a job and studying.
