There is increased attention on the need to shift nursing education from ADN to BSN as a way of improving quality of care and patient safety (Tumolo, 2007). The studies indicate that baccalaureate level nurses register better safety outcomes for patients with heart diseases, cancer surgeries, and reduced risk of death among other outcomes (Rosseter, 2014). A 2003 research by JAMA indicated that there is significant decrease in patient mortality when there are more nurses with BSN or higher involved in care because their offer safer care than the ADN prepared nurses (Tumolo, 2007). Proponents that BSN education is better indicate that BSN trained nurses are able to use their broad-based skills, critical thinking and exposure to societal norms and diverse cultures that make them more proficient in performing procedures and in administering the right medication than ADN nurses.
The research indicates that AND training offers basic bedside skills that are currently in the realm of nursing assistants and LPNs. They indicate that BSNS contribute to more patient safety because they are able to evaluate the overall condition of the patient (Ridley, 2008).
